Gut health guide: probiotics, digestive enzymes, fiber and glutamine

Digestion supplements support the everyday work your gut does: breaking down food, keeping you regular and keeping a healthy balance of gut bacteria. They are popular with people who eat a lot of protein and shakes, and with anyone who wants their digestion to feel comfortable through a hard training block.

There are four main kinds: probiotics, digestive enzymes, fiber, and gut drink mixes built on L-glutamine. This guide explains what each one does, how to read a probiotic label, and how the digestion products we carry compare.

We only carry the absolute best digestive supplements. Every product in this section was hand-selected by our team for its exact ingredients, potency and overall quality standards.

The four kinds of digestion supplement

TypeWhat it isBuilt for
ProbioticsLive bacteria (and sometimes yeast), counted in CFUSupporting a healthy balance of gut bacteria
Digestive enzymesProtease, amylase, lipase, lactase and othersHelping break down protein, carbs, fat and lactose, taken with meals
FiberPsyllium, guar, pectin and other plant fibersRegularity and everyday digestive health
Glutamine gut drinksL-glutamine with ingredients like apple cider vinegar, aloe and marshmallow rootDaily gut support in a flavored drink

How to read a probiotic label

  • CFU (colony-forming units) is the number of live cells. The NIH notes that many probiotics have 1 to 10 billion CFU a dose and some have 50 billion or more, but a higher count is not automatically more effective.
  • Strains matter. The best labels list the genus, species and strain code, like Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14 in Transparent Labs Gut Health. Core Gut lists 17 species by name.
  • Extras. Some formulas add a prebiotic fiber that feeds good bacteria, like the Sunfiber in Core Gut, or a probiotic yeast like the Saccharomyces boulardii in Flora-Protect.
  • Storage. Keep it the way the label says, since live cultures are sensitive to how they are stored.

Fiber, enzymes and glutamine

Fiber: the Daily Value is 28 g, and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans report that more than 90% of women and 97% of men fall short of their fiber target. A scoop of Fiber+ adds 10 g. Add fiber gradually and drink plenty of water.

Enzymes: look for activity units, not just milligrams. Protease is measured in HUT, amylase in DU, lactase in ALU and lipase in FIP, which tells you how much work the enzyme can do. Daily Zyme lists its activity units and is taken before meals.

L-glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in your muscles and blood, and the base of most gut drinks. GI Kickstart and plain Nutricost L-Glutamine each give 5 g a serving.

Common questions

Should I take a probiotic or a digestive enzyme?

They do different jobs. A probiotic adds live bacteria to support the balance in your gut. A digestive enzyme helps break down the food in a meal, so it is taken with or just before eating. Some people use both.

How many CFU should a probiotic have?

Many probiotics have 1 to 10 billion CFU a dose and some have 50 billion or more. The NIH notes a higher count is not automatically more effective, so look for named strains and a count guaranteed through the expiration date when the label gives it.

When should I take digestive enzymes?

With or right before a meal, since they work on the food you are eating. Daily Zyme's label says 1 capsule before a meal, twice a day.

Can I take fiber and a probiotic together?

Yes. Fiber feeds the good bacteria in your gut, which is why some probiotics include a prebiotic fiber. Add fiber gradually and drink plenty of water.

Who should check with a doctor before taking a gut supplement?

Anyone who is pregnant or nursing, takes medicine, or has a health condition. See your doctor about any stomach trouble that keeps coming back.
