Joint support guide: glucosamine, collagen and hyaluronic acid compared

Heavy training is hard on knees, elbows and shoulders. Joint supplements give your body the raw materials joints are made of, such as glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and hyaluronic acid, to support joint comfort, flexibility and mobility as you keep training.

There are three main approaches: building-block formulas, collagen peptides, and hyaluronic acid. This guide explains what each one is, how to read the doses, what to check if you have a shellfish allergy, and how the joint products we carry compare.

We only carry the absolute best joint supplements. Every product in this section was hand-selected by our team for its exact ingredients, potency and overall quality standards.

The three kinds of joint supplement

TypeWhat is in itHow you take it
Building-block formulasGlucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, often with type II collagen, hyaluronic acid and herbs like turmeric or boswelliaCapsules, usually several a day
Collagen peptidesHydrolyzed collagen (types I and III, mostly from cattle) that dissolves in hot or cold drinksOne or two scoops a day in coffee, water or a shake
Hyaluronic acidA natural part of the fluid that cushions your jointsA liquid by the teaspoon or a capsule

What the main ingredients are

  • Glucosamine and chondroitin are natural parts of cartilage, the tissue that lines the ends of your bones. Joint Defender has 1,500 mg of glucosamine and 500 mg of chondroitin in a full serving.
  • MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur compound often paired with glucosamine. Joint Defender has 1,000 mg.
  • Collagen peptides are broken-down collagen protein. In one study, 139 athletes took 5 g of specific collagen peptides a day for 12 weeks and reported less activity-related knee discomfort than the placebo group. Beverly Collagen Peptides and Transparent Labs Collagen give about 20 g a serving.
  • Hyaluronic acid is a natural part of the fluid in your joints. LubriSyn HA is a liquid with 60 mg in two teaspoons.

How to choose a joint supplement

Read the full serving

Joint formulas often split the dose across many capsules. Joint Defender's 1,500 mg of glucosamine is in 8 capsules. Hammer Tissue Rejuvenator has 500 mg each of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM in 4 capsules. Compare amounts per serving, not per capsule.

Shellfish allergy? Check the source

Glucosamine is often made from shellfish. Joint Defender's label says its glucosamine is shellfish free, while Tissue Rejuvenator's label says it contains crustacean shellfish and milk. The collagen powders here come from cattle, and Joint Defender's type II collagen comes from chicken, so read the label if you avoid either.

Pick a format you will take every day

Joint supplements are daily products, and the collagen research above ran for 12 weeks. Choose the format you will stick with: capsules, a scoop of collagen in your morning coffee, or a liquid by the teaspoon.

Collagen is protein, but not complete protein

A 20 g scoop of collagen adds about 18 to 20 g of protein, but collagen is missing the amino acid tryptophan. Keep counting your whey or other complete protein toward your daily target.

Common questions

What is the best supplement for joints?

It depends on what you want. A building-block formula like Joint Defender covers glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and hyaluronic acid in one serving. Collagen peptides are an easy daily scoop. Hyaluronic acid comes as a liquid or capsule. Many active people pair a joint formula with collagen.

How long do joint supplements take to work?

They are made for daily, long-term use rather than quick results. Studies on collagen peptides in athletes have run 12 to 24 weeks. Take yours every day as the label directs and give it a few months before you judge it.

Can I take collagen and glucosamine together?

Yes. They are different ingredients, and many people take a capsule formula plus a scoop of collagen. Follow each label and check with your doctor if you take any medicine.

Is glucosamine safe if I have a shellfish allergy?

Only if the label says the glucosamine is shellfish free, as Joint Defender's does. Many glucosamine products are made from shellfish, and Tissue Rejuvenator's label lists crustacean shellfish. Ask your doctor first if you have a shellfish allergy.

Does collagen count toward my protein?

It adds protein, but collagen is not a complete protein because it is missing tryptophan. Count your whey, casein or plant protein toward your daily target and use collagen as an add-on.
