Electrolyte powder guide: how much sodium you need and what to buy

Electrolytes are minerals, mainly sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride, that help your body hold and use water. You lose them in sweat, and sodium is the one you lose most. An electrolyte powder puts them back in a drink that is easier to get down than plain salt water and lighter than a sugary sports drink.

Every electrolyte mix we carry is caffeine-free with no sugar on the label, so the real choice is how much sodium you want. This guide explains how much you lose in sweat, how to match a mix to your training, and how our electrolyte powders compare per scoop.

We only carry the absolute best electrolyte mixes. Every product in this section was hand-selected by our team for its exact ingredients, potency and overall quality standards.

How much do you lose in sweat?

A review of sweat research found that people typically sweat about 0.5 to 2 liters an hour during exercise, and that the sodium in sweat varies a lot from person to person. Heavy, salty sweaters (you will see white marks on your hat or shirt) lose far more than light sweaters doing the same workout.

The American College of Sports Medicine suggests weighing yourself before and after training to estimate how much you sweat, and aiming not to lose more than 2% of your body weight in fluid during a session.

Keep your daily sodium in view

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans set a limit of less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day for most people, and also note that very active people may benefit from more sodium to replace what they sweat out. If you are not training hard or sweating much, a low-sodium mix is the better daily choice.

Potassium and magnesium

Potassium supports normal muscle function, and adults need 2,600 to 3,400 mg a day from all sources, mostly from food. Magnesium in a drink mix counts toward the 350 mg a day upper limit for magnesium from supplements, so add it up if you also take a magnesium capsule.

Sugar-free or with carbs

Sugar-free mixes are right for most training and daily use. For long endurance sessions, carbohydrate gives you fuel as well; add a carb powder to your bottle if you need it.

Common questions

Is it OK to drink electrolytes every day?

Yes, for most healthy adults, as long as your total sodium for the day stays in a sensible range. Pick a low-sodium mix like Ultima or SuperHuman Hydration for everyday use and save the 350 to 500 mg mixes for hard or hot training days.

How much sodium should be in an electrolyte drink?

It depends on how much you sweat. Under 150 mg a serving is a light top-up. 350 to 500 mg suits long sessions, heat and heavy sweaters. Weighing yourself before and after training is the easiest way to see how much you lose.

When should I take electrolytes?

Sip them before and during long or hot workouts, and after if you sweated heavily. On rest days, one serving with water is plenty for most people.

Do electrolyte powders have sugar or caffeine?

Many do, but every electrolyte mix in this section lists no sugar and no caffeine. Check labels on other brands: some sports drinks have 10 to 20 g of sugar a serving.

Do electrolytes break a fast?

A zero-calorie mix like Ultima will not add calories. Most of our other mixes have 5 to 10 calories a scoop, which many people who fast are comfortable with.

Electrolyte powder or a sports drink?

A sports drink adds sugar for fuel, which helps in long endurance events. For most gym sessions and everyday hydration, a sugar-free electrolyte powder gives you the minerals without the extra calories.
