Nootropic guide: focus and mood support, ingredient by ingredient

Nootropics are supplements built to support focus, mental clarity, mood and brain health. Some are full formulas with several ingredients, like L-tyrosine, citicoline and herbal extracts. Others are single ingredients such as lion's mane mushroom, saffron or alpha-GPC.

The nootropics we carry right now are stimulant-free, so they work for afternoon study, a long workday or alongside a pre-workout you already like. This guide explains the common ingredients, what to look for on the label, and how our nootropics compare.

We only carry the absolute best nootropics. Every product in this section was hand-selected by our team for its exact ingredients, potency and overall quality standards.

The ingredients worth knowing

  • L-tyrosine is an amino acid your body uses to make dopamine and norepinephrine. A 2015 review found it helped mental performance mainly in short, stressful or demanding situations. Dopamine+ has 1,500 mg in a serving.
  • Citicoline and alpha-GPC are forms of choline, a nutrient your brain uses to make acetylcholine. Adults need 425 to 550 mg of choline a day from food and supplements, according to the NIH. Cognizin is a branded citicoline found in Dopamine+ and Breaking Barriers.
  • Lion's mane is an edible mushroom sold for brain health. Check whether the label lists fruiting body powder, like Nutricost Lion's Mane, or an extract, like the 700 mg in Breaking Barriers.
  • Saffron extract is sold for mood support. Nutricost Saffron has 88.5 mg standardized to 0.3% safranal in one capsule.
  • Herbal extracts such as Sabroxy (Oroxylum indicum), IQ200 (Polygonum minus) and enXtra (Alpinia galanga) are branded ingredients the formulas use for focus and alertness.

How to choose a nootropic

Decide on caffeine

Caffeine is the most common focus ingredient in the store, but our current nootropics skip it. If you want caffeine, get it from your coffee or pre-workout and keep your total under the 400 mg a day the FDA cites for healthy adults. Like A Pro calls Breaking Barriers caffeine-free even though it contains coffee fruit extract.

Look for named ingredients with amounts

A good label lists every ingredient and its dose. Branded ingredients like Cognizin, Sabroxy and enXtra tell you exactly which raw material the brand bought.

Match the timing to your day

Most nootropics are taken in the morning or early afternoon. Transparent Labs suggests taking Dopamine+ on an empty stomach and not within 3 to 4 hours of bedtime.

Check with your doctor first

Nootropics are for healthy adults. Talk to your doctor before using one if you are pregnant or nursing, take medicine that affects mood or dopamine, or have a health condition.

Common questions

What are nootropics?

Nootropics are supplements built to support focus, mental clarity, mood and brain health. They range from single ingredients like lion's mane or alpha-GPC to full formulas that combine amino acids, choline sources and herbal extracts.

Do nootropics have caffeine?

Some do. The nootropics we carry right now are stimulant-free, so they do not add to your caffeine total. If a formula has caffeine, the label lists it, and you should count it with your coffee and pre-workout.

Can I take a nootropic with my pre-workout?

Usually, yes. Check both labels for overlap, since many pre-workouts already contain L-tyrosine, alpha-GPC or caffeine, and stay within each label's directions.

What is lion's mane good for?

Lion's mane is an edible mushroom sold to support brain health and focus. Products use either the whole fruiting body powder or a concentrated extract, so compare the form and the amount on the label.

When should I take a nootropic?

Most people take them in the morning or early afternoon, before work, study or training. Follow your label; some brands suggest an empty stomach and avoiding the hours before bed.
