Nutricost Magtein Magnesium L-Threonate

Magtein magnesium L-threonate for cognitive support, with 2,000 mg in a 3-capsule serving

This is Nutricost's magnesium L-threonate made with Magtein, the patented form licensed by ThreoTech. A 3-capsule serving gives you 2,000 mg of Magtein, which supplies 144 mg of magnesium, 34% of the Daily Value. The bottle holds 120 vegan capsules, so 40 servings, and Nutricost files it with its cognitive health products.

Magtein was developed to raise magnesium levels in the brain. In the original MIT study, rats given it had higher brain magnesium and did better on learning and memory tests (Slutsky et al., 2010). In a 2022 trial with 109 healthy adults, people taking a Magtein-based formula that also had phosphatidylserine and vitamins C and D scored higher on memory tests after 30 days than the placebo group (Zhang et al., 2022). The label splits the dose: 1 capsule in the morning and 2 capsules a couple of hours before bed.

How to use it

  1. Take 3 capsules a day with 8 to 12 oz of water: 1 in the morning and 2 about 2 hours before bed.
  2. For your first week, the label recommends 2 capsules at night.
  3. Don't take more than 4 g of Magtein in a day.

For healthy adults 18 and older. Not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Like other magnesium products, Magtein may cause sleepiness, drowsiness or headaches; the label says this may be a sign of low magnesium and is temporary. If it lasts more than a week, lower the dose, talk to a doctor or stop taking it. Check with a healthcare professional before use if you take prescription medication or have a medical condition. Each serving has 144 mg of magnesium, and the NIH's upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day for adults, so count any other magnesium you take. Keep out of reach of children, and don't use it if the safety seal is broken or missing.

A good fit if you

  • Want magnesium in the Magtein form for cognitive support
  • Already take magnesium and want the threonate form specifically
  • Like a split dose: one capsule in the morning, two in the evening
  • Prefer vegan capsules

Common questions

Why does the name say 48 mg?

That's the magnesium in each capsule. The 3-capsule serving has 2,000 mg of Magtein, which supplies 144 mg of magnesium, so 48 mg a capsule.

How is magnesium L-threonate different from magnesium glycinate?

Magnesium L-threonate (Magtein) was developed to raise magnesium in the brain, and that's what its research looks at. Glycinate gives you more magnesium per serving: our Nutricost magnesium glycinate has 210 mg in 3 capsules, against 144 mg here.

Why is the dose split between morning and night?

That's how the label directs it: 1 capsule in the morning and 2 about 2 hours before bed. The label also notes that Magtein, like other magnesium products, may cause sleepiness in some people.

Can I take it with other magnesium?

Check the total. This gives you 144 mg of magnesium a serving, and the NIH's upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day for adults.
