Nutricost Women Iron

Iron made for women, with 65 mg in one vegetarian capsule plus vitamin C, folate and B12

This is Nutricost's iron from its Women line: 65 mg of iron in one vegetarian capsule a day, from ferrous bisglycinate and ferrous fumarate. Nutricost adds 45 mg of vitamin C, 200 mcg DFE of folate and 500 mcg of vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin. The bottle holds 180 capsules, about six months at one a day.

Iron is part of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). NIH sets the iron RDA for women 19 to 50 at 18 mg a day, compared with 8 mg for men, and notes that menstruating women lose more iron. The vitamin C is there for a reason too: it helps your body absorb nonheme iron.

How to use it

  1. Take 1 capsule a day with 8 to 12 oz of water, and no more unless your healthcare professional tells you to.
  2. NIH suggests taking iron and calcium supplements at different times, since calcium can get in the way of iron absorption.
  3. Higher doses of iron can upset some stomachs. NIH notes that taking iron with food can help.
  4. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place where children can't reach it.

Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately. For healthy adults 18 and older. Check with a healthcare professional before use if you're pregnant or nursing, take medication or have a medical condition. Don't use it if the safety seal is broken or missing.

A good fit if you
