Nutricost Irish Sea Moss

Irish sea moss extract in vegan capsules, with 1,200 mg in a 2-capsule serving and 240 capsules in the bottle

This is Nutricost's Irish sea moss: 1,200 mg of a 10:1 Irish moss extract (Chondrus crispus) in a 2-capsule serving, or 600 mg a capsule. The bottle holds 240 vegan capsules, so 120 servings, about four months at the label dose.

Irish moss is a red seaweed used as food, and it naturally contains carrageenan, other plant carbohydrates and minerals, including iodine (NIH LactMed). The amount of iodine varies a lot from one seaweed to the next (NIH ODS), and Nutricost's label doesn't list an iodine amount, so keep that in mind if you watch your iodine intake. Nutricost sells it as a plain sea moss extract without any added herbs.

How to use it

  1. Take 2 capsules a day with 8 to 12 oz of water.
  2. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place.

For healthy adults 18 and older. Check with a healthcare professional before use if you're pregnant or nursing, take medication or have a medical condition. Sea moss contains iodine, and the NIH's LactMed database advises avoiding sea moss while breastfeeding unless its iodine and heavy metal levels are known to be low; this label doesn't list either. If you take another iodine or kelp supplement, or have been told to watch your iodine, ask your healthcare provider first. Keep out of reach of children, and don't use it if the safety seal is broken or missing.

A good fit if you

  • Want sea moss in a capsule instead of a gel
  • Prefer sea moss on its own, without bladderwrack or other herbs
  • Like a four-month supply in one bottle
  • Prefer vegan capsules

Common questions

How much sea moss is in each capsule?

600 mg of a 10:1 Irish moss extract, so 1,200 mg in the 2-capsule serving. The bottle has 240 capsules, which is 120 servings.

How much iodine is in it?

The label doesn't say. Sea moss naturally contains iodine, and the amount in seaweed varies widely, so if you need to keep track of your iodine, ask your healthcare provider before you take it.

How is this different from Nutricost's 10,000 mg sea moss?

That one is a sea moss blend with bladderwrack and burdock root, 120 capsules to a bottle. This one is Irish moss extract on its own, 240 capsules to a bottle.

Is it vegan?

Yes. The capsule is plant-based and the label carries an animal-free vegan seal. It also contains pea protein isolate, so check with your provider if you're allergic to peas.
